Southern-Style Seafood in Los Angeles

fishbone

Fishbone is a fast service seafood restaurant and market that specializes in southern-style seafood. I went to the location in Tarzana which is a small location in a little strip mall with a very small parking lot. There is also limited, paid street parking on Reseda Blvd.

Right when you walk into the restaurant you are greeted by a large case of fresh, raw fish, which is a great sign for good seafood. There is a long list of seafood (including catfish, salmon, shrimp, etc.) that you can order either grilled or fried. I ordered the lunch special because it comes with two filets of fish and one side (they also have a dinner special that includes three filets and two sides). I ordered the catfish filet, fried, and the rice and beans side. Everything was phenomenal. They advertise themselves as ‘fast food’ but, unless you call ahead, there is a bit of a wait (10-15 minutes) because the food is cooked to order (which I prefer).

They also give you tartar sauce and hot sauce with the food. The hot sauce was a little thin for me, but I loved the tartar sauce. The fish is light, crispy, and very well-seasoned. The fried catfish was actually so well-seasoned it was almost spicy, and it comes out so wonderfully hot. I also really liked the rice and beans side dish. It’s a fairly straightforward side dish, but it was really yummy. I have (obviously) eaten rice and beans before, but usually as two separate side dishes, not as one singular dish and I really enjoyed them together in one little bowl.

Next time I go to Fishbone I definitely want to try their grilled fish!
