Italian Gelato in Malibu

grom-gelato

I first had gelato from Grom when I was studying abroad in Italy my junior year of college.  That’s right, Grom, located in the Malibu Shopping Center, is a gelato shop originally from Turin, Italy. Grom imports their ingredients from Italy to make traditional Italian gelato.

Gelato is different from (and better than) ice cream. It is made with less fat than ice cream because gelato uses more milk and less heavy cream than ice cream. Gelato is also turned at a much slower pace making it denser because less air gets incorporated into it. Authentic gelato is also stored in silver canisters or flat. If you ever see gelato piled up high, it is probably closer to ice cream than gelato.

Grom keeps their gelato in the classic silver canisters, which is always a good sign you’re about to eat some good gelato. The small size fits two flavors, so I had pistachio and stracciatella (chocolate chip), my two favorites. The stracciatella was good, but the pistachio was great! I haven’t had pistachio that good since I was in Italy. It was creamy and flavorful and rich and I could’ve eaten pint after pint of that stuff! The stracciatella was also good, but it wasn’t nearly as smooth as the pistachio gelato. I look forward to trying more of their flavors because I will definitely be stopping by every time I am in Malibu.
