The Broad

The Broad is quickly climbing the ranks in popular Los Angeles museums. Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Broad specializes in modern art. General Admission is free, but parking is paid. The best option is the Broad parking structure, located underneath the museum. It’s $15 for 3 hours with museum validation. There is an onsite standby line to enter the museum, but I would recommend reserving your tickets in advance to bypass the line.

The Broad

The building itself is very unique. Designed by the architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, it was dubbed “the veil and the vault.” The building is designed to house both the public exhibition space, and collection storage. The “vault” is contained by the concrete you see within the building and running in a central column throughout the museum. The “veil” is the honeycomb-like structure that provides filtered natural light to the public exhibits. With this design, the artwork in storage becomes an integral part of the museum while maintaining a pleasant environment to enjoy the artwork on display.

To see the popular Infinity Mirror Room by Yayoi Kusama, it is important to get to the museum right when it opens (either join the standby line early or reserve your ticket ahead of time for an early time slot). Once you enter the museum, head to your left to an iPad kiosk with a museum staff-person and reserve your time to enter the infinity room. You can enjoy the rest of the museum while you wait for your time slot. Or, if you’re early enough, you can walk straight into the infinity room. You get 45 seconds in the infinity room and you can enter by yourself or with a friend. I went in with my sister!

If you can’t get into the infinity room, Yayoi Kusama also has another exhibit in the museum, Longing for Eternity, that did not have a wait-time when I was at the museum.

Longing for Eternity

Probably my favorite art instillation is the Blue Dog by Jeff Koons! He also has another exhibit called Tulips in the same style, but I’m a sucker for art inspired by dogs!

The Blue Dog

The Broad is a great museum and a fun, accessible way to enjoy contemporary art.
